About This Workshop

Gurdjieff Dance & Body-Mind Exercises
This workshop offers an experiential overview of the mind-body exercises brought to the West by GI Gurdjieff (1877-1949), further developed by Gurdjieff's student, JG Bennett (1886-1974), and continuing to be developed by Bennett's student, James Tomarelli (1944) who will lead the seminar.

Participants will explore the basics of both sitting and movement-dance meditation. Principles practiced include directed attention, relaxation, energy-sensing, and right posture. Inner meditative exercises, movement and music awareness exercises, and meditative dances will be introduced.

NB: Bring a cushion or stool for sitting meditation, a shawl or cotton blanket for stretching, and wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows for free movement. Dance slippers or bare feet.

Opening Up & Letting Go James Tomarelli's Comments

Personal Experiences

In 2002, after thirty-five years of study and professional work as a therapist, trainer, and teacher, I began the Gurdjieff Dance and Inner Exercise Work with
James Tomarelliand for me a unifying process began in my personal life and professional work. In the seminars in which I participated and in the ongoing group-work with others under James' direction, I learned to discover the difference between what is partial (subjective) in the body and what is whole (objective). I began to be able to observe the whole consciously, to distinguish for myself the difference between feeling, thought, and action, and to discover how mind and attention can rightly re-integrate these vital human centers back to wholeness.
Fosco Matteini, physiotherapist
, Method Mézières, certified Antiginnastica trainer and practitioner

"I have been a health professional accompanying individuals and groups in listening to their bodies and facilitating body-mind activities with them for twenty years, and only since I began this work in 2003 with James Tomarelli have I been able to say: 'Ah! This is what it is!' And, I am certain, there is much more to understand."
Chiara Purcaro, pre- and post-natal educator, certified "Antiginnastica praticenne"

"Ever since I began practicing (in 2007) the Dances and Meditations of GI Gurdjieff and JG Bennett with James Tomarelli, something in me has relaxed and opened—and my awareness of others and myself has shifted: everything is now more clear, more real. My professional practice and my day-to-day life are no longer what they were before."
Francesco de Cenzo, fisioterapista, terapista craniosacrale Biodinamica

Overview of Practices & Work We Will Do at the Workshop
by
Chiara Purcaro, pre- and post-natal educator, certified Antiginnastica praticenne.

Inhabiting the body, feeling the life that moves inside it, stimulating and activating the inner healer, the parasympathetic system, entering the body’s deep relaxation, letting thoughts and useless tension flow to make room for the experience of the force of life.

Feeling one's breath at this very moment, being more present through the experience of the body’s weight here and now, the relationship between the body and the earth, inviting a more marked and organic awareness of one’s life.

In this seminar we invite you to lay aside everything you have always been told about the body and body-work methods and to enter another dimension of bodily experience. We guarantee you will discover something new.

In this seminar we present inner exercises and outer movements to be practiced with a unique quality of attention. Through the practice of “active attention,” distinct physiological energies (inside the body) are collected, released and mixed in accordance with natural and organic principles and laws.

In this seminar we will use a unique form of movement-meditation, which offers a particularly favorable framework for the development of finer energies of attention and the awakening of latent inner faculties essential for continuous human development.

When practiced correctly, these exercises bring about changes in blood flow, respiratory rate, and brain oxygenation -- allowing clear mind, heightened presence, and real relationships with oneself and others. When active attention touches the sensation of life inside the body, we can begin to become receptive to even higher levels of consciousness.

In the first phase of this movement-meditation seminar, we will meet those factors which act to automatically hinder our effectiveness as caring human beings: the mind with its wandering “thoughts”, its changing “beliefs”, its endless “knowledge”; the emotions with their stop-and-go likes and dislikes; and the useless gross and subtle tensions that prevent normal healthy human functioning. We will then see that we can and do “have a choice” -- to begin the work of energy transformation, to experience objective states, to begin new relationships.

Professionals in the health and healing professions as well as those who use body-mediation as a tool for improvement of one’s psychophysical health will receive many advantages from this seminar, including a deepening in their understanding of their body, an appreciation of the possibility of a real relationship with clients and others, and a deeper sense of the purpose of one’s professional work.

What you gain from this seminar can be applied to your whole life.

‘I have been a health professional accompanying individuals and groups in listening to their bodies and facilitating body-mind activities with them for twenty years, and only since I began this work four years ago have I been able to say: “Ah! This is what it is!”. And, I am certain, there is more.’
